Country House. c1845; north wing demolished c1960. Possibly contains a
mid-C18 core. Ashlar, red and yellow brick, tiled roofs. Moulded plinth.
Main elevation; 2 storeys, 6 bays 1:3:2. Giant tetrastyle Ionic portico
with coffered ceiling and pediment bearing elaborate achievement of arms.
Ground floor: Double-leaf glazed door with pilasters to reveals. 4-pane
sashes in architraves with sills: continuous cornice over 3 bays within
portico, with sills and cornices elsewhere. Deep moulded eaves cornice,
roof balustrade with intermediate and angle pilasters. Axial stacks: in red
and yellow brick with stone cornice to left, in ashlar to similar design to
right. Three bays of ground floor of demolished north wing survive as
screen wall, with blocked openings, to left. Park front: 2 storeys, 12 bays
3:6:3 with polygonal bays to right and to left. Ground floor: 2-leaf garden
door under large 2-pane oblong fanlight, in architrave, to right of central
six bays. Elsewhere 4-pane sashes in architraves with plain band connecting
cornices. First floor: sashes with glazing bars in architraves, and
pediments to centre windows of polygonal bays. Deep moulded eaves cornice.
Centre piece with heavy acanthus scrolls under low pediment, without
cornices, flanked to right and to left by roof balustrade terminating in
pilasters surmounted by urns. Garden elevation: 2 storeys, 6 bays. Ground
floor: 4-pane sashes with sills and plain band between cornices. 1st floor:
sashes with glazing bars in architraves, pedimented to centre 2 bays. Deep
moulded eaves cornice, 2-bay coped centrepiece with blank panelling flanked
by roof balustrade with intermediate and end pilasters surmounted by urns.
Interior: Ballroom (to right of main elevation) has ornate panelling and
decoration in French Rococo style, including a series of overdoor paintings
signed R.W. Buss 1848. Main staircase taken down and rebuilt elsewhere in
the house, has cut-string stair, gilt cast-iron railings with heavy foliage,
and a moulded oak handrail.
