Description

ASHREIGNEY COTTWOOD
SS 61 SW
6/34 Blacksmith's Cottage
GV II
Cottage. Late C16 possibly with earlier origins, with C20 addition. Rendered cob
walls. Gable ended slate roof. Brick axial stack.
Plan: original plan not entirely clear - probably either 2 or 3 rooms but may have
been truncated at left-hand end. Large heated room at the centre with axial stack
at its left end and unheated room beyond it. At the right end of the large room is
a very narrow room which was formerly heated by a gable end stack but it may be that
both the stack and partition with the large room are subsequent insertions. C20
addition at left-hand end.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2-window front of early C20 2-light casements,
single light to left on ground floor. Gabled C20 porch to right of centre with
part-glazed door. C20 flat roofed addition at left-hand end.
Interior: main room has open fireplace with narrow chamfered wooden lintel and
straight-cut stops. Over partition to small room is chamfered cross beam with
pyramid stops. One of the roof timbers has a slightly curved foot and another is
jointed at the front into a post going down into the wall. No access to roof-space.
