Parish Church. The chancel arch and west doorway (now covered by west tower) remain
of the original C12 church. C13 west tower and north arcade. Early C15 north aisle,
south wall of nave and chancel. To the west of the tower and adjoining it are the
ruins of the C15 west chapel. Mid C13 west tower of rubblestone with quoins of
Barnack stone. Three stages and embattled parapet with moulded string course.
Gargoyles to each corner, except for the north-east. Three stage angle buttressing.
Moulded string course between each stage. Ground floor originally open sided. Two
centred arches of two orders, the inner resting on corbels. The corbels of the western
arch are carved with stiff leaf foliage. The north, south and west walls of the first
stage have each one tall lancet, the inner chamfered, the outer moulded. Moulded label
with mask stop. The east wall of the first stage has the marks of the gabled roof
of the C12 nave. Each wall of the bell chamber has two lancets with moulded label and
stops. Ruins of the north and south walls of the C15 west chapel adjoin the west
tower. Rubblestone with Barnack ashlar. Two niches in the east wall. Nave of
rubblestone. Roof with parapet and two gargoyles on south side. Each side of C15
clerestory has three, two cinquefoil light windows in square heads under segmental
headed arches. String course at sill height. South wall of nave; two C15 three light
windows with ogee heads and vertical tracery in four centred heads with moulded label
and returned stops. C13 south doorway reset. Chamfered jambs and three moulded
orders in two centred head. C19 gabled porch. Early C15 north aisle. Three, two
cinquefoil light windows in square heads under segmental headed arches. One similar
window in east wall. C14 north doorway, chamfered jambs and two centred arch with
moulded label and returned stops. Early C15 chancel, shortened C16 and east wall
rebuilt. Rubblestone. North wall has one cinquefoil light window (restored) in
four centred head with transome forming low side. Original oak shutter. C16 east
wall of coursed Barnack stone with C19 three light window in two centred head.
South wall: one similar window with low side and shutter and one C15 two cinquefoil
light window with quatrefoil spandrel in four centred heal, C15 doorway, Chamfered
jambs and four centred head with moulded label.
Interior: C12 chancel arch. semi-circular headed and of two orders on west face.
Soffit of arch has two broad rolls carried on two half round shafts with moulded
bases, chamfered and grooved abaci and capitals carved with basket ornament. The
inner capital is carved away for screen. Outer order has a free shaft with moulded
base and cushion capital. C15 screen of five bays, including doorway. Some of the
closed lower panels have been restored. C12 west doorway. Of three orders, two
outer roll moulded and round, inner plain with a lintel and sealed tympanum. Diaper
ornament to chamfered label. Jambs with two free shafts with moulded bases,
chamfered and grooved abaci and cushion or scalloped capitals with concentric ring
ornament. Early C13 north arcade of three bays. Two centred arches of one hollow
chamfered order springing from three moulded corbels at each end. Two octagonal
columns with moulded bases, square plinths and moulded capitals with stiff leaf
foliage and square abaci. C19 roof. Late C12 font. Stone. Originally square,
now with angle cut off. Round stem with necking and base. Fine C14 lectern.
Seventeen C15-C16 pews with square ends.
