House formerly the vicarage. Early-mid C18 with mid-later C19 addition. Rendered
stone rubble walls. Deep hipped. Slate roof with C19 crested ridge tiles which
have cross finials at each end. Rendered brick stack to each end and brick stack at
side of Victorian addition.
Plans: original house is double depth, 2 rooms wide with central through-passage
which has a staircase half-way along on the right-hand side. Behind this is a small
pantry and the former kitchen. In the mid-late C19 a larger kitchen and service
rooms were added at the right-hand end set back slightly.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Symmetrical 3-window front to left with paired late C19 6-pane
sashes, a single one at the centre on the first floor. At centre is original porch
which has flat hood with moulded cornice on fluted Corinthian columns. C19 4-panel
door behind. Probably original modillion eaves cornice and rusticated plaster
quoins. Victorian addition set back from right-hand end has late C19 2-pane sash.
Rear elevation of house is symmetrical with original paired 12-pane sashes and tall
small-pane stair window.
Interior retains much original good quality joinery, left-hand front room has
complete fielded panelling with chair rail and panelled shutters and contemporary
chimneypiece. Room to its rear has similar shutters and chair rail. Original open
well staircase survives with cut string, turned balusters and newel and ramped
handrail. Fielded panelling underneath stairs and cornice in key motif to landing
above. On the first floor there are fielded panel window seats and shutters. 6
panel doors throughtout house.
This is a relatively unusual example of a C18 house with fairly complete interior
and unaltered plan form.
