8/148 Church of St. Peter and
St. Paul
GV II
Roman Catholic Church, 1789. Squared coursed sandstone with slate roof and
chamfered quoins. Windows to west and east walls have plain stone surrounds
with semi-circular heads with projecting imposts and keystones, the east wall
being of 5 bays and the west of 4. The north wall has a plain stone door
surround of alternating rustication with semi-circular head and glazed
fanlight with glazing bars. Above is a plain stone window surround with
semi-circular head having projecting imposts and keystone, lighting the
gallery. The south end has a hipped roof with moulded eaves cornice, and
a blocked plain stone window surround on each floor. To the west is a
single-storey bay linking the church to the presbytery. Interior. At the
north end is a gallery having a front of stick balusters, projecting at
the centre in a half oval. The gallery is supported by slim iron columns
and reached by a stair with ramped handrail and stick balusters. When
viewed from the south the church appears to be one of a pair of pavilions
to Stidd Lodge (q.v.).
