Cottage. Mid C17, modernised circa 1970. Plastered stone rubble with some cobs
stone rubble stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; corrugated iron roof over the
thatch.
Plan: 2-room plan cottage facing south-west. The larger left (north-west) room was
the kitchen, and has a projecting end stack. It contains the front door and C20
stair which might originally have been contained in a central through-passage. The
right room, the parlour, has an end stack. The present kitchen is in the secondary
outshot across the back. Cottage is 2 storeys.
Exterior: balanced but not symmetrical 2-window front of C20 casements without
glazing bars. The front doorway is left of centre and contains a C20 door behind a
contemporary gabled porch. Roof is tall and steeply-pitched. It is gable-ended to
right and hipped to left.
Interior: the right room, the parlour, has a soffit-chamfered crossbeam with step
stops. The left room has one C17 crossbeam with broad soffit-chamfers and a C20
replacement, the latter maybe along the line of the former passage screen. Both
fireplaces are blocked by C20 grates but alongside the kitchen fireplace the oven
housing intrudes into the room. The roof was not inspected although the bases of
straight principals show on the first floor, their scantling large enough to suggest
that they belong to C17 A-frame trusses.
