School and masters house. Circa 1870. Snecked local grey-coloured limestone with
ashlar quoins and cream-coloured sandstone detail; grey limestone stacks with
sandstone octagonal chimneyshafts; slate roof.
Plan: T-shaped building. The main block, that is the school, faces south; the
master's house is a 2-room plan crosswing with 2 projecting outer lateral stacks.
The school is mostly single storey but as high as the 2-storey masters' house.
Exterior: 3:2-window window front of double-lancet windows with transoms and the
first floor one in the gable-end of the masters house to right, the first floor
window is similar but with a quatrefoil light over making an Early Decorated plate
tracery window. The same arrangement of 2 ground floor double lancets and first
floor plate-tracery window in the left gable end. Most of the windows still contain
rectangular panes of leaded glass but some are replaced by plate glass. The roofs
of the main block and masters' house crosswing are gable-ended with shaped kneelers
and coping and the roof is steeply pitched. It includes a lead lantern surmounted by
a wrought iron weathervane over the school. The entrances to both school and
masters house are to rear through a lean to porch in the angles of the wings.
Interior: not inspected.
This relatively unmodernised building alongside the churchyard contributes to the
scattered but unspoilt centre of Hockworthy parish which includes several other
important listed buildings.
