private gardens,
east of terrace
II
Gateway to the grotto. c.1810, possibly re-using an early C18
eared surround. Limestone ashlar. Central gateway with possibly
re-used eared and keyed surround with outer rusticated Doric
pilasters. Pulvinated frieze and broken scrolled segmental
pediment with recessed central panel. Centre piece is flanked by
added semi-circular headed niches, with moulded cornices. Beyond
the gate a set of irregular natural stone steps, leads to the
grotto, formed from a dis-used quarry. On the terraces round
about grew exotic alpine flowers and the place was the exclusive
retreat of the family. Built as part of the formal gardens of
Easton Hall, seat of the Cholmeley family.
