Late C16. High steep-roofed gabled, weatherboarded, timberframed, 6-bay barn.
1-bay stable extension to N of same height. Central projecting gabled
porch with small recessed outshuts to sides. Low brick plinth in English
bond. Remarkably low height of walls. Framed clasped purlin roof with
collars and diminished principals. 1 purlin to each slope with evidence
for windbraces in each bay. Long curved braces from heavily jowled posts
to low tie beams. Queen struts added. Original heavy wall studs with
edge holes and slots for wattle infill. Central rear winnowing door
flanked by posts and tension braces. Asbestos sheet roof but irregular
battens indicate thatch formerly. Porch roof and that of southern 5-bays
reconstructed, the latter with diagonal corner ties and wrought iron
brackets from posts to tie-beams. Interior of walls of this part also
weatherboarded. A survivor of a medieval type of barn where storage is
mainly in the roof.
