Pair of houses. Early C19. Red brick with some grey sandstone ashlar
dressings. Slate roof. 3 storeys. Chamfered painted stone plinth, dentil
brick cornice (bricks on side) and parapet and parapeted gable ends with
stone copings. Integral brick end stacks and central brick ridge stack.
9 bays; 4-pane sashes with painted stone cills and painted stepped stone
lintels with raised keystones. Blind centre bays. Doorways in third and
seventh bays. Left-hand door has 4 raised and fielded panels and centre
beading, blank radial fanlight, and brick doorcase with chamfered stone
plinth, stone impost blocks, raised triple keystone, and open triangular
pediment with moulded wooden cornice. Curved wrought-iron handrail to
right with cast-iron columnular post. Right-hand door with 4 raised and
fielded panels and centre beading, rectangular overlight, reveals and
soffit with raised and fielded panels, and wooden doorcase with pilasters
supporting entablature. Slate steps to each door. Interiors partly
inspected. Dog-leg wooden staircase rising to attic in No. 42, with a
closed string, turned balusters, columnular intermediate newel, and
octagonal foot newel (possibly later). Staircase in No. 44, rising to
attic in 2 single flights, with open string, cast-iron balusters, and
octagonal wooden foot newel.
