strades and walls
to Girsby Manor
II
Gates, gate piers and flanking balustrades and walls. c.1840,
reconstructed 1905. Brick, ashlar, concrete and wrought iron.
Pair of wrought iron gates with decorative upper and lower rails
and vertical panels, containing curlicues, surmounted by scrolled
top and centre piece, flanked by square ashlar cordonned pillars
with moulded bases and capitals, having egg and dart frieze,
segmental pediments surmounted by moulded concrete foxes. In the
front pediments are scrolled cartouches, that on the left
contains initials "V.U.St.J" and on the right the date "1905".
To either side are straight ashlar balustrades, surmounted by
curling wrought iron side brackets, the balustrades terminating
in square piers with ball finials. Beyond are curving sections
of balustrade terminating in similar piers. Beyond again to the
road side are stone coped low brick walls, 9 bays to the left and
3 bays to the right, divided by square brick piers again with
stone ball finials. Girsby Manor, now demolished, belonged to
the Fox family, hence the rebus gate piers which were erected by
John St. Vigor Fox.
