Farmhouse. Early C18 possibly a rebuilding of an earlier house some C20 alterations.
Rendered, probably cob and stone rubble; asbestos slate roof (formerly thatched),
half-hipped at ends; 3 rear lateral stacks, the rear right stack later than the other
2.
Plan: An interesting late vernacular plan, presumably derived from the 3 room and
through passage arrangement and still asymmetrical suggesting the possibility of
remodelling of an earlier house. Single depth, 3 rooms wide with an entrance to left
of centre into a through passage which includes the main stair; heated parlour to the
left, large heated room to the right, presumably the farm kitchen but with no
evidence of a bread oven, with a second stair adjacent to the stack, smaller room at
the extreme right with C20 subdivisions. The first floor has an original axial
passage and a stair to the attic which was evidently also used for accommodation The
rear door of the through passage leads into a small enclosed courtyard of out
buildings including a granary to the rear right: the house faces the farmbuildings in
a yard to the east.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front with regular fenestration. Front
door to left of centre is a late C20 replacement; C20 door at extreme right into the
right end of the house. 3-light casement windows except for a 2-light window over
the porch: these all appear to be C18, some with bead-moulded mullions, some with
mullions hollow-chamfered to the interior and glazed with small pane timber
casements.
Interior: Largely unaltered. the left-hand room has an C18 chimney-piece with
modest carved decoration and a C19 grate, the room to right of centre has a massive
open fireplace with ashlar jambs and iron lintel with a brick arch: a stair with a
straight flight with a winder rises adjacent to the stack. The principal stair has
an extremely attractive splat version of a twisted baluster balustrade. Several C18
doors on the first floor.
Roof: Collar rafter roof trusses pegged at the apex with collars nailed on to the
principal rafters.
