House and adjoining cottage. Probably C17 origins with early C18 alterations and a
circa early C19 remodelling. Whitewashed and rendered, probably cob and stone
rubble; 2-span hipped slate roof to main block with deep eaves, slate roof hipped at
end to adjoining wing (Spurway Cottage); axial stack and right end lateral stack to
wing.
Plan: Main block rectangular on plan and double depth with a central entrance into a
stair hall; wing adjoining at right end has a lower roofline and outshut.
Documentation refers to alterations carried out at the house 1718-21 including
"Building a Staire Case and lasting improvements and Reparations on Higher Oakford"
(Bentley).
Exterior: 2 storeys. Symmetrical 3-bay front to the main block plus 2 window
adjacent wing. The main block has a central entrance with a good early C19 glazed
porch with a cornice and 2-leaf half-glazed outer door with Gothic arched lights and
stained glass. Double-hung sash with glazing bars and margin glazing above porch;
tripartite sashes with glazing bars to outer bays. The adjoining wing faces the
opposite way: to the rear it has an outshut with 2 windows. The left return of the
main block has a 2-bay garden elevation with glazed garden doors in the ground floor
and a verandah on posts; tripartite timber sashes to the first floor.
Interior: Not inspected at time of survey but said to retain an early C18 stair and
other features of interest may survive.
The Spurway family at Oakford Manor have been associated with Oakford parish and a
manorial title for more than 700 years (Bentley).
