TL 72 NE GREENSTEAD GREEN AND RUSSELL'S ROAD

House. Cl6, altered in C17/18, extended in C20. Timber framed, plastered,
roofed with handmade red plain tiles. C16 3-bay crosswing of parallelogram plan
aligned N-S (entrance elevation to N) with 2 external stacks to left. C17/18
wing to right (on site of former open hall) with Cl7 internal stack at the
junction, and C20 extension beyond. Lean-to extension in front right angle,
forming a catslide with the crosswing. Large C20 extensions of 2 and one
storeys to rear right. 2 storeys. In crosswing, one-window range of early C19
sashes of 16 lights. To right of it, 2-window range of C20 casements. C20 door
in catslide extension. Additional C20 door in recessed porch in right return.
The C16 crosswing has chamfered axial beams with step stops, plain joists of
horizontal section, some jowled storey posts, face-halved and bladed scarfs in
both wallplates, clasped purlin roof. An original ground-floor partition
between the 2 front bays has been removed. Groove for sliding shutter in rear
wall. Brick base of bread oven behind internal stack, oven demolished. Wide
wood-burning hearth facing to left, C20 grate to right.
