House. Early C17, altered in C19 and C20. Timber framed, plastered, roofed
with handmade red plain tiles. 3 bays facing SW, with axial stack to left of
centre. Rear wing, 1986. 2 storeys. Ground floor, 2 C19 and 2 C20 casements.
First floor, 2 C20 casements and one small light. Door in rear wing. Shaped
sprockets under eaves. Diamond-shaped plaque on front of stack, outlined with
blue bricks, inscribed 'O.S.O. 1870' (for Onley Savill Onley, né Harvey) and 4
C19 octagonal shafts. Jowled posts, primary straight bracing. In left bay,
chamfered axial beam with lamb's tongue stops, and plain joists of vertical
section jointed to it with soffit tenons with diminished haunches. In middle
and right bays, chamfered binding beam and re-used plain joists of horizontal
section. Second post from left in front wall severed approx. 2 metres from
ground. The stack has some C16/early C17 brickwork, but has been reduced in
depth and largely rebuilt in the C19. Small C19 hearth to left, large C20
hearth to right. On first floor, small C19 cast iron grate in left hearth;
another has been re-sited on the first floor of the 1986 extension. The frame
includes much re-used timber. 2 diamond mortices and a shutter rebate in the
front wallplate for a ventilated closet. Roof mainly of clasped purlin
construction, partly butt purlin. Original infilled partition in roof between
middle and right bay. Moated site. RCHM 2.
