Description

SX 6493 - 6593 SOUTH TAWTON SOUTH ZEAL

8/255 2 cottages adjoining to
to rear (south-west) of No. 1
Mill House
GV II

Pair of cottages. Late C17-early C18, possibly C16 origins. Partly plastered
walls, mostly granite stone rubble but sections are cob; disused cob stacks;
corrugated iron roof, formerly thatch.
Plan: pair of 1-room plan cottages projecting at right angles to rear of No. 1 Mill
House (q.v.) and facing south-east. Both have stacks on the left ends, the one
belonging to the right cottage backing onto the left cottage. Both are 2 storeys.
Exterior: overall 4-window front, each cottage with a 2-window front and front
doorway on the right side. Part of the ground floor front belonging to the right
cottage is hidden behind a C20 garage. The windows are C19, some are casements with
glazing bars (and one of the first floor windows has one light containing tiny
rectangular panes of leaded glass), others are fixed pane and glazed with
overlapping panes, workshop fashion. One however, the ground floor one at the left
end, maybe C18; a 2-light flat-faced mullion window with a glazing rebate but now
shuttered. The left cottage doorway contains an old, maybe original, plank door
with coverstrips. The right cottage doorway contains a C19 plank door. Roof is
gable-ended to left and hipped to right.
Interior has plain carpentry detail; roughly-finished crossbeams, plain oak lintels
to the granite fireplaces and roof of A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed
collars. At the right end, on the front corner, where the right cottage abuts No. 1
Mill House there is a tiny blocked first floor doorway; a round-headed arch
probably C16 in date.
South Zeal is special being one of the few medieval boroughs in Devon where a
significant number of its C16 and C17 houses survive.
