House. Mid C18, possibly with earlier core. Ashlar facade. Dressed stone
elsewhere. Pantiled roof. 2 storeys. Main block 3 bays with lean-to on
west side, projecting west wing and irregular additions to rear.
Central 6-panelled door with high 4-paned overlight. 12-pane sash windows.
Steeply-pitched gabled roof with reverse-stepped gables and rebuilt end stacks.
West wing, projecting on right, formerly 2 storeys and 3 bays, now roofless and
derelict. Central 2-leaf harr-hung door.
Left return reveals older masonry, especially in lower courses.
Rear facade is irregular and picturesque with 2-storey lean-to on left and
3 other lean-tos, all of varying heights with pantiled roofs.
Interior: Staircase with stick balusters, turned newels and ramped handrail.
Large 6-panelled doors in broad architraves. Two rooms have pronounced Ionic
modillion cornices and dado rails.
Said to be on site of, and partly incorporating masonry of house in which the
Earl of Surrey stayed before the Battle of Flodden.
Was, at one stage, a coaching inn called the George and Dragon.
