Small square manor house. Late C17, variously attributed to John
Paget c.1700 and Peter Mills, one of the surveyors appointed to
supervise the rebuilding of London after the Great Fire c.1680.
Rubble stone, coursed and dressed on offset plinth to south-west
with alternating chamfered quoins, hipped and sprocketted stone
slate roof with wooden eaves cornice, large central stone stack
with moulded cornice and linked flues. Square range with lean-to
on south east side. Two storeys and attic. Front elevation to
south-west has 5 windows, 2-light ovolo-moulded stone mullion and
transoms with leaded lights. Four similar windows on ground floor
with continuous dripmould and central doorcase of moulded stone
with cornice and large segmental pediment. Door of 8 fielded
panels with side lights and plain 6-light fanlight. Rear elevation
has 2-light stone mullion windows and projecting stair tower of 16
storeys with hipped roof. Front and rear have one, sides two
hipped dormers with wooden cornices and bedmould and paired leaded
casements.
Interior: Rear staircase has thick turned balusters and square
newel posts. Article in Country Life, Vol 159 by Marcus Binney
(1976) describes interior, which includes living room with exposed
beam and Doric pilasters flanking fireplace, mid C18 fireplace
from Clutton House, Kingston-upon-Thames, in dining room, most
original oak or elm floorboards, most upstairs rooms with panelling
in window reveals and window seats, but interior not accessible at
time of survey (June 1985).
Gate piers of ashlar, square with offset plinth to front, moulded
cornice with ball finial on saddlestone base. Approximately 2m
total height, attached on each side to coursed rubble stone wall
with flat coping, which joins lean-to on south-east of house on
right.
