HAWLING HAWLING VILLAGE
SP 02 SE
9/32 Stables, Middle Farm
II
Former stables, now housing for cattle. C17, altered early C19.
Small coursed, squared stone, ashlar or near ashlar dressings,
stone slate roof. Six bays, one room deep, 1 1/2 storeys. Facade
to yard: plinth, oval window from 4 stones forming rectangle;
boarded door, chamfered surround, 4-centred arch: similar window
to right. To right shallow, projecting wing, blocked door reduced
to window, timber lintel, on left; to right sets back, door and
oval window only to right, as left end. Above pitching hole in
projecting wing, 3-piece stone lintel, diagonally-set square
opening in gable, too small for owlhole. Parapet gables ends and
cross wing, cross-gablet apices. Internally, one room in part of
left end, remainder single room: balancing projection to road does
not register internally on ground floor. Collar rafter trusses, 2
pairs purlins, plank ridge. Single-storey C17 building, a rare
survival, altered by raising eaves and adding loft C19.
