Memorial Cross at head of grave. Late C19. Stone. Tapering
cross shaft, panelled, with 'Celtic' interlace and embossed
cross on face, cable moulding to the corners. Cross-in-wheel
head, also bossed at the centre and terminals. Plinth of
cross has the incription: 'In Memory of William Barnes, Died
Oct 7th 1886. Aged 86 Years. For 24 Years Rector of this Parish.
This Memorial was raised to his Memory by his Children and
Grandchildren." The sculptor inscribed on plinth: GRASSBY
DORCHESTER. The memorial is of special historic interest, being
that of William Barnes, polymath, Dorset dialect poet, schoolmaster
and rector of Winterborne Came 1862-1886. Barnes lived latterly
at Old Came Rectory (q.v.).
