14/45 Barn and other farm buildings,
Snig's End Farm
GV II
Farmstead. Probably mid C19. English garden wall bond brickwork,
stone plinth only to barn; tiled roof. 'L'-plan: 2-bay cartshed,
granary over on right, 3-unit barn, of same height, rest low,
single storey. Viewed from yard, stone steps to granary door on
right return: main facade, on right cartshed opening, flat timber
lintel, brick-on-edge course over, central timber post on stone
base, stone hinge blocks for former gates. Above single-light
window, iron bars, flat stone lintel. Fascia to open rafter eaves.
To left, wide double door opening between wide openings to eaves
with brick grille panels, all to cambered brick arches. Stone
hinge blocks for doors, now removed. Internally, low brick wall
with timber cap to left of threshing floor: wide centre bay in
roof, 2 narrow bays each end, queen-post trusses with metal bolts,
2 pairs purlins, plank ridge, braces wall plate to lower purlin
over threshing floor. To left, set back, 3-bay open-fronted
cowhouse, timber posts to front, king-post trusses with iron bolts,
one pair purlins, internal buttress to back wall at each truss.
Similar 5-bay cowhouse at right-angles on left, stone paving
survives, but no fittings in either. Corner walled off as feed
room, door to back of each cowhouse. Roof hipped over corner. To
left in return wing two 3-bay sections, brick front, each boarded
door and 2-light window, rising to wallplate, stone window sill.
Right unit stable, part of rack survives, door at front to left
room, probably feed preparation, door at rear to further 3-bay open
cowhouse: front partly built up late C20. Three pigsties beyond,
shed with yard: stone copings to yard walls, end yard wall random
rubble stone. Forms group with house and Chartist cottages (q.v.),
important feature in Gloucester Road. Listed principally for group
value.
