3P4735 ADDERBURY OXFORD ROAD
Adderbury East
7/99 Duchess Bridge and flanking
walls
II
Road bridge. Probably mid C18 for the Duke of Buccleuch. Marlstone ashlar.
Depressed arch has rusticated voussoirs, alternately longer and shorter; eastern
arch was formerly flanked by blind keyed occuli, only one of which remains.
Plain parapet, rising from and parallel to a band, cants over the arch, and is
terminated by square piers, on the western side flanked by matching walling and
further piers extending approximately 18 metres to south and north. Eastern
parapet has been raised. The bridge forms a feature in the grounds of Adderbury
House (q.v.). The Duke of Buccleuch employed Capability Brown in the development
off the former park.
