Formerly a hall-house, cut in half by railway, now public house. C.17
incorporating timber framings thought to be of the C15. Altered.
Hammer dressed stone. Quoins. Stone slate roof (turned), with
chamfered gable copings. Single storey main hall with 2 storey
crosswing to left. 12-light hollow chamfered, mullioned and transomed
hall window with hood mould. Crosswing has single light in gable apex
one 5-light window to 1st floor, and one 6-light window to ground floor,
all hollow, double chamfered and with hood moulds. Outshut to crosswing.
The rear of the building, (to road), is altered. The crosswing has one
square cut 3-light window to each floor. A rear wing has main entrance.
Outshut to each side. Some double chamfered windows.
Timber framing is exposed internally. The crosswing is separately framed
from main hall, and is more complete. Much of timber work is replaced.
Jowelled posts and arched braces. C.17 plasterwork to hall ceiling.
The house was the home of eminent C.18 scientist Joseph Priestley.
