BRAILES WHATCOTE ROAD

3/67 Compton Pike
- II
Probably erected as a beacon and subsequently used as a landmark. C16. Coursed
squared ironstone rubble. Base of square section tapering upwards to a point
surmounted by a ball finial with iron hook at the apex. Noted as probably being
one of the network of beacons covering the country to give warning of the
landing of the Spaniards at the time of the Armada. The iron hood at the apex
would have supported either a lantern or a flaming fagot.
