Accommodation arch. Probably 1832-4 by T.E. Harrison, consultant engineer R.
Stephenson, for Stanhope and Tyne Railroad Company. Irregular courses of
squared sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings. Tall round arch with voussoirs
under parapet with block coping; flanking retaining walls on each side have
plain flat coping and end in low rectangular piers.
The embankment formerly led from the Hownes Gill incline, replaced in 1858 by
the viaduct (q.v.).
