5/41 Church of The Holy Trinity
II
Parish Church; 1817; roughly squared stone, more or less coursed,
with ashlar dressings; top stage to tower ashlar, slate roof.
Wide, 3-bay nave, small chancel, west tower, north and south
porches. The south side has a plain, ashlar plinth; porch in
centre of nave; original planked door in pointed arch up stone
steps with simple iron railings; plain string course across gable
only at springing of arch to door. Either side in nave wall a 3-
light window with pointed head, Y tracery and hood mould. Angle
buttresses to corner nave, porch and tower; plain copings to all
gables. Tower in three stages, divided by plain string courses;
small lancet to top of first, small circle second, 2-light window
with louvres and Y tracery to top, all with raised surrounds;
crenellated parapet. Entrance on west face of tower, pointed head,
string course at springing level, breaking forward with consoles
below at door.
Internally nave a plastered hall with flat ceiling; western gallery
has panelled front on timber Doric columns; access by external
stone stair. Chancel has plain stone arch, and pointed plaster
barrel vault. Ten commandments on painted plaques either side of
east window. First Anglican church built within Forest of Dean.
