II
Farmhouse, mid-C16 with alterations c.1700. 2 storeys, 4 windows. Timber-
framed, encased in painted brick at front and sides. Hipped plain-tiled roof
with axial chimneys of red brick. C18 mullioned and transomed windows of 4 and
6 lights. Late C18 6-panelled entrance door with architrave and flat canopy.
Upon this moated site stood the retreat house of the Abbots of St. Edmunds
Abbey from the C13. At the Dissolution, Thomas Kitson of Hengrave Hall bought
the estate and built the present house, probably incorporating some framing
members from the pre-Dissolution Hall. Re-roofing and other alterations
carried out c.1700.
