Public house. Early C19 and probably earlier. Gault brick,
weatherboarded timber framing, slate roofs. Approximate T
shaped plan. 2 storeys, attics and cellars.
E front elevation: 6 window range, string course between
ground and first floor. Bay 4 from S lifted to simple pediment
over segment headed 3x4 paned attic sash window, stack behind.
Hipped mansard roof with gabled dormer casement windows
towards N and S ends. Principal facade windows have stuccoed
voussoirs, all except one, sashes with glazing bars, first
floor, S-N, two 4x4 panes, three 3x4 panes, one triple sash,
2x4, 2x4, 2x4 with keystoned voussoirs. Ground floor, four 4x4
paned windows with central doorway with similar voussoir
overlight and side lights (now blocked), doors, one of 6 flush
panels, one of 2 lower flush panels and upper 2x2 paned
glazing, window between, glazing bars, 7x3 panes.
Rear W elevation: large timber-framed and weatherboarded
central wing to W. Mansard roof with ramped dormer window to S
with three 2x2 paned casement windows. Scattered windows to
side walls. To S, 2-storey timber-framed and plastered lean-to
with large red brick stack at roof junction, further single
storeyed lean-to continues to S end of building, both have C20
pargetting. Other features include a first floor gabled
projection on simple posts behind 2-storeyed addition and a
C20 weatherboarded lean-to porch to plain back door, also, 2
and 3-light casement windows on ground and first floor of
single and 2-storeyed lean-tos.
S end elevation: gault brick with hip of mansard roof. Shallow
bay window on ground and first floor, both with sashes, 2x4,
4x4, 2x4 panes, string course between windows. Attic sash
window 4x4 panes. Brick wall contiuned to W to cover end of
rear lean-to, containing small C19 ground floor casement
window. N end elevation: similar to S but simpler with single
ground floor fixed window with glazing bars, 4x4 panes. The
lack of strict symmetry of the front, together with the large
rear red brick stack suggests an earlier origin, most probably
an amalgamation of at least 2 units.
