Conduit to north-west corner of The
Close

Conduit head and pump. 1786. Ashlar. Pump encased in tall
square structure, with adjoining low platform. Pump casing has
band below round niche to each face and simple domed cap; slit
for handle to west, spout to north. Platform has inset stone
basin. The conduit was established c1140-7, the supply being
augmented in 1259, an early example of a piped water supply.
The old structure was demolished and replaced by the present
structure, which was in turn superseded by the conduit in the
garden of No.15 in 1803.
