Almshouses. 1846-48, by Sharman of Spalding. Red brick with
stone dressings. Cut slate roofs. 3 blocks arranged as a
courtyard and linked by short crenellated walls with doorways.
Centre block is single-storeyed with a large projecting
central gable articulated by diagonal buttresses terminating
in finials. Central arched door flanked by a cinquefoiled
light right and left, all under square hoods on label stops. 2
cinquefoiled lights in gable under a 4-centred arch. Either
side are one arched doorway under a square hood, each flanked
by a 2-light arched casement, also with hoods on labels. Stone
quoins and eaves cornice. Gabled roof with 4 ridge stacks,
each with twin decorated flues. North and south blocks are
reduced versions of the same design: central gable is lower,
does not project and has no doorway; west gable ends have
polygonal corner turrets with tall finials and the west gable
walls have one crenellated oriel each. 5 ridge stacks each.
