Bridge carrying towpath of Leeds-Liverpool Canal over junction
with Rufford Branch Canal or "New Cut". Dated 1816 on
keystones of both sides, probably replacing an earlier swing
bridge; for the Leeds-Liverpool Canal Company, resident
engineer Richard Owen. Sandstone ashlar. A high
semi-elliptical arch with rusticated voussoirs and a carved
keystone flanked by sunk panels with the raised digits "18"
and "16"; a broad band, and parapet of massive dressed blocks
with rounded coping; rusticated pilasters; oval number plates
"1" on both sides. The most visually striking component of a
group of canal structures at Top Locks. Located on boundary
between Burscough CP and Lathom CP.
