House. Mid-C16, c1600 and C20. Exposed timber-frame with stout
studding, peg-tiled roofs with rear dormer. Late medieval hall
house of U-plan, solar to W and service to E (no front
projection of cross-wings).
EXTERIOR: 2 storeyed 4 window range, all C20 wooden casements
with lattice leaded lights. C20 porch off centre to W gabled,
brick with glazed upper section of lattice leaded lights and
boarded door. 2 areas of C20 herring-bone brickwork on ground
floor at both ends of hall. Timber-framing of front shows site
of original hall window, original hall top plate and raising
of the hall wall with primary braced framing sitting upon the
earlier work. Framing of cross-wing same as hall but
considerably rebuilt in the upper parts. Cross-wing roofs show
side purlins projecting. Chimney-stack to E of centre of hall
in front of apex, red brick, some burnt, C17.
INTERIOR: evidence most complete on ground floor as rebuilding
of upper floor and roof in C17 and C20 has removed much
original detail. Ground floor cross wall at high end of hall
has 2 original doorways to solar with depressed 4 centred
arched heads and central post with single stud brace nailed to
verticals. Hall has inserted floor/ceiling with common joists
laid flat with step stops to chamfers and diminished haunched
soffit tenons to bridging joist. Supporting clamps pegged to
outer walls have grooves on under surfaces. Rising brace from
the rear principal post of the hall central truss survives in
part. Inserted stack c1600 virtually fills the low end of the
hall and no cross entry evidence survives. At first floor,
hall tie-beam removed when roof raised in late C16 (present
tie-beam at upper level probably the original simply lifted).
Roof evidence slight but a number of reused joists with skew
joints probably from original roof - of collar rafter type -
supported by crown posts and collar purlin. In roof 2 reused
window mullions with rolls and hollow chamfers possibly from
original hall windows. Solar cross-wing rear bay at ground
floor has flat laid ceiling joists with diminished haunches
and step stopped chamfers. Stair trap leading from original
hall doorway with stair in part original with triangular
section block treads nailed to strings. Service cross-wing
much rebuilt from reused material. Wall frame though still
contains on first floor a late medieval window with cyma and
hollow mouldings also original. On exterior, one normal stud
brace and one with reverse curve (up-swinging). Stack serving
this cross-wing apparently added in C18/C19 onto C17 one
inserted into hall. C19 fireplace on first floor. Rear of
house has cross-wings projecting and C20 lean to addition to W
Original house framing partly preserved with remains of stud
bracing and evidence of raising of roof of hall with primary
bracing. Windows as at front. Rear door in hall also glazed
with lattice leaded lights and simple hood over. Second door
to W boarded stable type with hood. Dating phases :- (1) Stud
bracing, window in service cross-wing and hall doors, c1550.
(2) Inserted hall floor, raising of hall walls and major stack
c1600 with perhaps new floors of rear of solar cross-wing. (3)
C18/C19 stack added to service cross-wing and roof reworked
over hall. (4) C20 porch, much refurbishment and incorporation
of new wood and timber from old buildings and repositioning
members in house, new windows.
