The Avenue Arcade
GV II
House, now shopping arcade. Late C18/early C19; made into
shopping arcade in late C19. Flemish-bond brick with stone
coping, cornice, moulded keyed lintels and cills. 3 storeys;
symmetrical 3-window range. All windows are 6/6-pane sashes,
larger to the first floor. A set-back wide entrance to the
arcade is flanked by plate-glass shop windows. The rear
elevation, in Clare Street, has a pantile roof hipped to the
right; flat brick arches over 8/8-pane sash windows on first
floor; ground floor remodelled in late C19 has granite columns
with Corinthian columns to moulded fascia over plate-glass
shop windows. INTERIOR: the shops in the arcade are
articulated by narrow paired pilasters on simulated granite
plinths; moulded cornices to fascias; plate-glass windows,
including those to rear, have narrow horizontal bands of
pierced cast-iron to tops and are panelled below; doors are
glazed, with horizontal moulded panels to bases and have plain
overlights. The ceiling of the arcade is panelled at ends with
C20 glazed pitched roof to centre. History: a photograph of
1905 shows the High Street entrance to have had similar
Corinthian columns.
