673-1/8/163 (South side)
23/10/72 No.1
GV II
Probably the rear block of a merchant's house, now a separate
house. Origins in the first half of the C17, with C19 and C20
modernisations. Mixed construction; stone rubble southern
party wall, other walls are plastered or slate-hung
timber-framing; stacks with rendered brick chimneyshafts;
slate roof.
PLAN: Small one-room plan house, originally the back block of
a C17 gallery-and-back-block house. The gallery and front
block are now divided off as No.1 Lower street (qv).
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with attics; 2-window front. Front and
exposed side walls are plastered and lightly blocked out as
ashlar with slate-hung gable ends. 1980s uPVC windows.
Ground-floor front doorway contains a C20 part-glazed door
with C20 display window to right, used by the adjoining shop.
Plain eaves.
INTERIOR: Largely shows the result of the C19 and C20
modernisations.
No early carpentry or joinery is exposed and the fireplaces
are blocked by C19 and C20 grates. Roof not inspected.
