No.6
GV II
House, formerly a pair of small houses. c1830-40, altered when
houses united in late C20. Plastered stone rubble; end stacks
with plastered brick chimneyshaft and old pots; slate roof.
PLAN: Originally a mirror plan pair, each unit one room wide
and 2 rooms deep.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; symmetrical 2-window front. Central
paired doorways recessed in the same opening - the right one
is now blocked and the left one now contains a C20 top-glazed
door. Windows all contain original unusual sash windows, 8
panes with margin glazing. Plain eaves to parallel roof. More
original sashes to rear.
INTERIOR: not inspected but likely to be of interest.
The houses of Charles Street enclose the west side of the
Market Square, and comprise a good group of artisan dwellings.
The whole area was developed in the 1820s and 1830s on land
reclaimed from the old tidal mill pool.
