Farmhouse. Late C16 with mid-C19 and mid-C20 alterations and additions. Part
timber-framed with rendered infill on sandstone and brick base, part rebuilt in
brick with brick additions; plain tiled roofs. Hall and cross-wing plan; hall
part rebuilt in brick is of one bay aligned east/west with cross-wing of two
framed bays at west gable end with large central chimney and ridge stack. Two
storeys, attic and cellar; dentilled eaves cornice. Framing: cross-wing has two
rows of close-set studding on each floor, long straight braces in lower corners
and short straight braces in upper corners; south gable end has jettied first
floor and attic floor on decoratively carved consoles; collar and tie-beam
trusses with two collars; south gable end has herringbone panels to lower collar
rind four struts beneath upper collar; north gable end truss has four struts to
lower and two struts to upper collar; both have a concave V-strut in apex.
liouth front elevation: hall part has central C20 glazed double doors flanked by
C20 casements of two lights and a 4-light C20 first floor casement; large stack
at right end of ridge; cross-wing gable end has cellar window with cambered
head, a 3-light ground floor casement, and a 5-light first floor casement and an
attic light. Attic lights in east gable end of hall part. Interior not
inspected, but cross-wing noted as having moulded ceiling beams and also said to
have back-to-back fireplaces. Large C20 full-height wing to east side of north
bay of cross-wing with lean-to beneath catslide at rear in which is situated the
present main entrance. Also C19 single-storey wing to rear gable end of
cross-wing. (BoE, p 153).
