Orangery. c1800. By John Carr. For Sir Richard Van den Bempde-Johnstone.
Sandstone ashlar on tooled sandstone plinth to front; orange-red brick in
English garden wall bond with sandstone dressings to sides and rear.
Rectangular on plan, the plinth extended at front to form a small terrace.
Single-storey, arcaded front of 5 bays. Round-arched openings with moulded
hoods spring from pilaster piers with moulded imposts. Clasping pilasters
at each end. Entrance to centre beneath radial-glazed light flanked by
radial-glazed sashes. Moulded eaves course and cornice. Roof has collapsed
but is said to have been glazed. Rear: 5-bay blind arcade of recessed round
aches with sandstone sill, imposts and keystones. Return fronts: single
tall radial-glazed sash with sandstone sill, imposts and keystone. C
