Stables and riding house. Circa early C19, probably by Lewis Wyatt. Square courtyard, with 2-storeyed r anges on 3 sides, with a 3-storeyed centrepiece to the eastern entrance; the west range is single-storeyed of the same height, ending in projecting octagons. Hipped slate roofing; stucco walling with plain cambered openings to the upper floor, plinth. The east (main) facade, of 3.3.3 windows has a tall centrepiece with an attic floor, 4 pilasters, architraves to the openings, a central arch with a keystone, moulded cornices at the top and another (with a deep coving) along the whole of the front at eaves level. The centrepiece is crowned by a timber clock tower, with dome, corner pilasters, arched opening to the upper stage, ball finials above corner pilasters to the clock face stage. The west facade (Riding School) has 9 blind arcades, the upper parts formed as lunette windows, the arcading being repeated on the square faces of the octagon en4a. The front part of the block is still residential and the south range is mainly a stable block. SOURCE: Buildings of England, p.262.
