Terrace. 1902-1905. By Parker and Unwin, for Joseph Rowntree Village
Trust. Brick, whitewashed to wings and first floor, with weatherboarding to
gables and pantile roof. Cottages with parlour and living room, side entry
to end cottages, direct entry to middle cottages. 2 storeys, 8 first-floor
windows, symmetrical facade with 2-bay gabled cross wings to either end.
Replacement doors and standard "New Earswick" window panes throughout.
Spinal range: additional porches flanked by 3-light and 4-light casements.
Wings: pairs of 4-light windows with entrances in porches to side. First
floor: 3-light gabled half dormers to central range. 4-light casements to
gables. Stacks removed. The particular significance of New Earswick lies
in its contribution to the development of low cost housing in Britain.
Experience gained and practices introduced here were incorporated
extensively into the Tudor Walters Report of 1918 which was instrumental in
the passing of the Addison Act of 1919. Plans from New Earswick influenced
the Government Manual on low cost housing which followed the Act.
