House. Early C18 with mid C19 remodelling of cross wing and additions.
Hammer dressed sandstone, brick rear wing, blue pantile roof to earliest
wing, Welsh slate roofs to later wings. Originally L-shaped with cross wing
to right, with latter additions to rear. 2 storeys, 5 first floor windows
including 2 in gable end of cross wing. Early C18 wing: 2-course plinth.
6-panel double door with top 2 panels glazed, in eared architrave carrying
pulvinated frieze and moulded pediment. 20-pane sash windows in moulded
architraves to left. First floor: 20-pane sash windows in moulded
architraves. Coved eaves. Gable coping and shaped kneeler to left. End
stacks and ridge stack. Cross wing: 2-course plinth. One ground floor and
2 first floor windows, all sashes with glazing bars in moulded architraves.
Gable coping, shaped kneelers, end stack. Interior contains mid C19
staircase with column-on-vase balusters, probably contemporary with major
remodelling of cross wing both internally and externally. Hallway arch
carried on acanthus leaf consoles. 6 fielded-panel doors to all major
rooms. Wide board door with H-L hinges to former kitchen. Wrought-iron
railings and gate to front garden. A J Toynbee wrote 'The Study of History'
here.
