House. c1880. By John Birch, for the Sledmere Estate. Pink-orange brick
in Flemish bond, on moulded brick plinth; orange gauged-brick quoins and
dressings; tile roof. Corner site. 2-storey, 5-bay front; left end, centre
and right-of-centre bays project, and left end bay canted on street corner.
Ground floor of right-of-centre bay forms porch with shallow Tudor-arched
opening and recessed half-glazed front door. Bay to right has 4-light
casement window with square leaded glazing beneath cambered gauged brick
arch. Centre bay has 5-light canted bay window with square leaded glazing
and half-hexagonal pent roof. Next left bay has 2-light window beneath
segmental arch with corniced keystone: uncarved terracotta panel sunk in
moulded surround above. Cross window beneath shallow Tudor arch in corner
bay. First floors of corner and right-of-centre bays are jettied and
contain 2-light casements with square leaded glazing beneath cambered gauged
brick arches. Right end and centre bay have similar 2- and 3-light windows
respectively. Windows are all recessed in moulded brick surrounds with
moulded terracotta sills. All bays except the centre left one are gabled
with barge boards and terracotta finials. Low stack at right end and
panelled ridge stack towards left end, both corniced. Roof hipped at left
end. Left return: 2-storey, 1-window gabled bay with 1-storey, 4-window
service wing at left. 3-light ground-floor window beneath segmental arch
with corniced keystone in 2-storey bay, with 2-light first-floor window.
Service wing has 3 similar windows and one C20 top-opening light in altered
opening. Central ridge stack, panelled and corniced. Finial at left end.
Right return: external stack with tumbled brick offsets. House built
originally as Estate Office and Manager's House.
