GV II
Recreational building dressed as folly. Early C19 with minor C20
alterations. Rock-faced coursed stone, steeply-pitched shaped tile
roof; roll-crested verge parapets on corbelled kneelers; twin-
shafted end stack to left and ridge stack to right; string at first-
floor level; 2-storey and 2-storey plus attic, 3-window front. Small
slightly projecting gable inset to left and larger projecting gable
to right; the former has a single-light attic window over a labelled
2-light stone mullioned first-floor window, the latter similarly
increases from a single-light upper attic window over 2 and 3 lights
below; both gables have Tudor-arch entrances with C20 glazed doors;
the wide central recess has a 4-light stone mullion window to the
first floor over a taller and transomed window to the ground floor;
single-light transomed windows are set at the extremities of the
building. To the rear and north-east (and rather inconspicuous from
the approach) are set crenellated square and octagonal towers facing
a small lake; the rather dichotomic planning presumably to create
a prospect never completed. The interior of the building once housed
a heated swimming pool with attendant service quarters, for the use
of guests of Basford Hall (q.v.), home of the Sneyd family.
