The Cannon Brewery building
GV II
Brewery buildings. 1893. By Bradford and Sons. Granite,
sandstone, red brick set in Flemish bond and probably
terracotta; roof obscured by parapet. Three storeys over
basement, four-window range. Battered granite plinth;
rusticated brickwork to ground floor; elliptical-arched
carriage entrance with gauged brick head, the brickwork in the
form of voussoirs, and rounded granite moulding to the
intrados; panelled and elaborately ornamented wooden gates;
three segmental-arched windows with gauged brick heads and
keystones, one to the left, two to the right. The first- and
second-floor windows are grouped in vertical pairs in recessed
panels under an elliptical arch of gauged brick, the windows
themselves being flat-arched with sill bands and lintel bands
of sandstone, and divided in two by sandstone mullions;
decorative panels, probably of terracotta, between the first
and second floors. Brick modillion cornice; parapet with
raised central panel inscribed 'CANNON BREWERY'.
