19/03/73 Statue of Charles Kingsley

GV II

Statue. 1906. By Joseph Whitehead. White marble figure of
Kingsley dressed in an academic gown, right foot forward; pen
in right hand, 2 books in left hand. Stands on a tall
pedestal, probably of Portland stone, with moulded cap and
base; on the front of it is incised KINGSLEY. At the back of
the foot of the statue is incised JOSEPH WHITEHEAD. SCULPTOR.
LONDON S.E. Attached to the base of the pedestal is a bronze
wreath inscribed: CHARLES KINGSLEY. Born 12th June 1819. A
tribute of honour and esteem from the inhabitants of Bideford.
June 12th 1919. The statue has lost its right little finger
and the top of the pen. Whitehead, of Vincent Square,
Westminster, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1889, 1893,
1894, and 1895.
