GV II
Row of 8 small town houses. c.1830, altered. Red brick in 5+1
English garden wall bond (Nos.3 and 4 now roughcast, No.6
painted red, and No.8 rebuilt), with sandstone dressings and
slate roof. Double-depth plan, each house single-fronted, a
through-lobby in the centre of each pair. Two storeys over
cellars, each house 2 bays; with a plain frieze and moulded
gutter cornice. The doorways of each pair, up 2 steps with
nosings (except Nos.4, 5 and 6, which have altered steps),
forming a triplet with the lobby door between, have
round-headed architraves with set-in Tuscan quarter columns,
plain lintels, and semicircular fanlights with hollow-moulded
surrounds and altered glazing, and altered doors. Each house
has one window at ground floor and 2 above, all with raised
sills and those at ground floor with wedge lintels (all
glazing altered); cellar windows with wedge lintels, those at
Nos.6, 7 and 8 protected by gratings (others altered). Ridge
chimneys at the junctions of the pairs. Rear and INTERIOR not
inspected, but known to have former laundry cellars under
front rooms. The item is part of a formerly complete set of
late Georgian lower-middle class town houses in this street.
