Dry dock. c1857. Red sandstone with wrought-iron gates. 400'
long dock cut out of natural rock with stepped profile and
reinforced by sandstone piers. Dock walls topped with cobbles
and bollards. Original iron dock gates. The dock where a
number of famous ships were built, including the Confederate
Navy raider Alabama launched in 1862 and sunk off Cherbourg in
1864. This structure receives its starred status by virtue of
its important historical associations.
