House. C18, restored by CR Cockerell, 1819-36. Brick; ashlar;
slate roof; various brick stacks with ashlar heads.
3-storeys and basement; 9-window range: central bay containing
three 6/6 sashes under gauged brick flat arches, with
protruding wings each having a 6/6 sash with ashlar case and
hood on consoles, flanked by, to left, 2 round-headed 9/6
sashes, to right coved stucco niches, in moulded stucco
architraves; rusticated quoins; coved ashlar cornice; central
bay has three 6/6 sashes; wings, one 6/6 sash between paired
ashlar pilasters; coved ashlar cornice and parapet. Ground
floor advanced, with balustraded parapet over; central bay of
3 tall 6/6 sashes under gauged brick flat arches; flanked by
porticoes, containing central doors and sashes, under ashlar
cornices.
2 wings, slightly recessed; to left, two 6/6 sashes under
gauged brick flat arches; moulded stucco cornice; stone coped
brick parapet; hipped slate roof; 2 taller 6/6 sashes to
ground floor, with ashlar band over; cast-iron railings to
basement area; right wing similar but larger, with 2 windows
to each floor. South front has advanced central bay, with
balustraded balcony on scrolled brackets and plain pilasters
to 1st floor, and pediment over.
Rear has various wings, parterre and colonnade. East front has
central Venetian windows with 4/4: 11/6: 4/4 sashes to ground
and 1st floors, with pediment over, and to left, semi-circular
wing.
INTERIOR: the Greek Revival staircase-hall, picture gallery
and library are of particular interest.
