Yew Tree Cottage

House. C15 Wealden hall-house, extended by one bay to left in
early C19 and extended to rear c1929. Timber-framed with jetty
on each side and coved recessed centre. Exposed down bracing
and plastered infill. Steeply pitched tiled roof with gablets.
Inserted brick stack to right and further external stack to
left. 3 restored casements and late C16 or early C17 oriel to
hall. One original 3-light mullioned window under coving.
Original 4-centred arched doorcase with blank spandrels and
C20 plank door.
Interior has late C16 inserted inglenook fireplace with niches
and ceiling with lamb's tongue stops. Crenellated dais beam to
open hall and unusual 2-arched doorcases to solar end. Service
end has similar arched doorcase with high step. Late C16 or
early C17 panelling. 2 traces of steps for ladders. Octagonal
crownpost with 4 head braces to collar beam. Powder Closet. A
fine Wealden house with unusually complete survival of
internal features.
