Terrace of houses incorporating gateway to Dean's Yard. 1853-54 by
Sir George Gilbert Scott. Bath stone with gault brick and stone to Dean's
Yard, slate roofs. Gothic with some early Tudor features, a carefully
asymmetrical composition about the formal gatehouse with lively and varied
skyline. 4 storeys, basements and dormered attics. 2 or 3 window wide
fronts. Octagonal turreted and battlemented gatehouse. Houses have,
pointed and 4 centred-arched doorways paired or set to right, some as
recessed porches. 4 centred and square headed windows stone mullioned,
some with tracery, rectangular through-storey bay windows and oriels;
traceried balconies, buttresses, stepped gables and battlements.
Decorative iron gates to vaulted carriageway. Ornate Gothic area railings.
The rear to Dean's Yard plainer with stone mullioned windows and
rectangular oriel-bays. Single storey rear extension to Nos. 2 and 3.
Fine Gothic ironwork to areas on this front with the party boundary walls
of Nos. 4 and 5 surmounted by ornate Gothic lamps, flanking gatehouse
approach.
