War Memorial and screening wall

GV II

War memorial. c1920. Sandstone ashlar memorial cross and
rusticated sandstone screen wall. Cross hexagonal on plan, in
half-hexagonal screen wall. Cross on tall tapering shaft with
broach-stopped foot and base and chamfered plinth, set
diagonally on high stepped pedestal. Plinth inscribed on each
face with one of six virtues: Justice, Mercy, Obedience,
Sacrifice, Courage and Patience. Pedestal has moulded top,
stepped-up on alternate faces over panels carved with badges
bearing an anchor, the RAF cipher and a sword. Screen wall
incorporates First World War memorial panel in centre, and
Second World War panel to right. Wall is coped and has carved
heraldic lions couchant at each end.
